THE COW PELT
We believe every beautiful design is a byproduct of sensuality created from nature and an opportunity to continue telling the story. We work with nature's subtle connections of color, light and texture resulting in a style of organic simplicity and luxury.
The process of handcrafting from nature is not about perfection, it’s about inspiration and expression, which never goes out of style.
“Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.” - Gary Snyder
OUR MISSION
We aim to maintain a commitment to quality service while creating unique designs with a traditional flare that will compliment all decor styles and withstand ever-changing trends.
Vintage Wall Baskets
In rural Zambia, new brides are given these rare handwoven baskets handmade from the roots of the Makenge bush, which is truly an art form of its own.
A vintage wedding basket is a woman’s most useful and valuable possession. This is an old tradition carried on from centuries. The baskets are handed down to the bride by their mother or mother-in-law. In the future, the same basket will be passed on to her newly married daughter.
The baskets are weaved by the most skilled Mbunda craftswomen of the remote western province of Zambia. They are considered to be a highly coveted collector’s item. The baskets are extremely durable due to the fact they can be used in a single family for over a century. The baskets age increases their value.
Each basket features a unique one-of-a-kind pattern including raised grass designs and is redecorated over time to convey messages of beauty, marriage and family.
Hand-Carved Sculptures
The wood-carved animals are made of jacaranda wood and completely handcrafted from one solid tree trunk. Each piece is unique!
Gemsbok Horn Lamp
This impressive and stunning lamp will make a statement on an entrance table, console table, in a large master bedroom suite or office. A black hardwood base supports the three natural gemsbok horns that gracefully flank the deluxe nickel lamp rod.
Hand-Carved Bamileke Stools
Beautifully and entirely hand-carved from one whole tree trunk representing both the life cycle and the divine wisdom. The mid-20th century table or stool is a handmade throne of African hardwood from the Bamileke tribe located West of the Republic of Cameroon, Central Africa. The tribe believes the web of the earth spider is a link between the two worlds, and carving the designs into the wood pieces allow loved ones to be connected to ceremonies in spirit.
Pieces created by the Bamileke, like the work of other kingdoms of the Cameroon Grasslands, often play an important role in state ceremonies. These hand-carved stools have long been used as ceremonial seating to indicate the status and power of tribal chiefs and kings. The status of the owner is represented in the particular design.
Among the many cultures that exist throughout the African continent, the creation of hand-carved stools is one of the oldest and most pervasive furniture traditions. Each is designed with its own cultural context and meaning with a distinct history that is often not just a resting station for objects or bodies. The Bamileke stool is a work of art, a touch of African culture and history, and so much more than a coffee table
